Public charging lives or dies on reliability. A station drivers cannot depend on is worse than no station at all.

Overview

Public charging is a different business from private charging. The user is a stranger, they are in a hurry, and they will not come back to a site that failed them once. Uptime, payment reliability and accurate availability data matter more than headline charging speed.

We design public sites around that reality: appropriate charger mix, redundancy where it counts, network integration so availability is visible before a driver arrives, and payment paths that work on the first attempt.

  1. Location & demand assessment

    Traffic volume and type, EV penetration on that route, dwell-time behaviour, competing chargers within range, and visibility from the road.

  2. Charger mix & capacity planning

    How many charge points, at what power, and whether the site should be sized now for later expansion — usually cheaper than retrofitting capacity afterwards.

  3. Electrical infrastructure

    Load sanction or enhancement, transformer requirements where applicable, LT panel, protection and metering.

  4. Civil works & layout

    Foundations, vehicle circulation and parking geometry, canopy, lighting, bollards and signage — a layout drivers can use at night without hesitating.

  5. Network & payment integration

    OCPP-based network connectivity, listing on charging discovery apps, and payment configuration so the station is findable and usable.

  6. Commissioning & O&M

    Full testing, plus a maintenance and fault-response arrangement — because on a public site, downtime is lost revenue and lost repeat users.

What charger power is right for a public site?

Match it to dwell time. Highway stops need high-power DC because drivers will not wait an hour. A mall where people park for two or three hours can serve more vehicles per rupee invested with lower-power units. Over-specifying power on a long-dwell site wastes capital that would have been better spent on more charge points.

How is payment handled?

Through the charging network's app and payment integration, typically supporting UPI and cards. What matters operationally is that a first-time user can complete a payment without creating an account or calling support — every extra step loses drivers.

What causes public chargers to sit unused?

In practice: not being listed on the apps drivers actually use, showing stale availability data, payment failures, poor lighting or unsafe access after dark, and blocked bays. Almost all of these are design and operations problems rather than hardware problems.

Should the site be sized for future expansion?

Usually yes. The electrical infrastructure and civil work — the load sanction, transformer, cable and ducting — are the expensive, disruptive parts. Sizing those for a second phase at the outset is far cheaper than digging the site up again in two years.
